Rules are specific statements that specify what should be done and what should not be done in an organization

They specify the dos and don'ts of  an organisation and are usually put in place to regulate the behaviour and action of members of the organisation.

Rules are set in place to regulate and maintain disciple in the organization.

On the other hand, methods are systematic ways of carrying out a particular task. 

They are prescribed ways or manners of performing a particular task.

Differences Between Rules and Methods

1. Rules outline what should be done and what should not be done, whereas methods outline the ideal manner to complete a task.

2. The purpose of making a rule is to regulate the behaviour of members of the organisation whereas the purpose of establishing a method is to standardize the work processes in the organization.

3. Example of the rule is no smoking. An example of the method is internal and external methods of recruitment.

4. Rules are usually derived from managerial thinking since they are usually the result of the policies of an organisation.

On the other hand, methods are usually the result of trials and research done to determine the best way to perform a task.

5. While methods are created to improve efficiency in an organization's work processes, rules are created to regulate behavior and uphold discipline within the organization.

6. Violation of rules always attracts punishment whereas violation of methods does not always attract punishment.

7. Rules are typically rigid because they must be strictly followed whereas methods are relatively flexible.

Simply said, methods are usually more flexible than rules.
